Its ancestors lived in the Terra Nova Island

All in all, the Labrador origin is from Terra Nova, an island discovered in 1494 by some English fishermen. These settled there an important fishing industry. However, it was necessary to wait until the XVII for the native man of Saint John’s to be more interested about dogs of water which lived in the island.

Several types of dogs made up this population of Labradors. But the base of the future Labrador retriever was the dog whose hair was short and straight. Before receiving its official name, The United Kingdom named the first samples as Saint John’s water dogs, assuring that its place of origin was Newfoundland.

The attraction that Sailors and businessmen felt towards theses dogs was so great that during 1820 and 1830, the first samples were exported to England. The main port from where the future ancestors came were preferred by the “gamekeepers” because of the way it complemented against the country stars; the Setters and the Pointers.

In 1870, an article was published in the newspaper “illustrated London News,” which narrated the canine exposition in Birmingham and stated that they would have loved to see the difference between the well-known dog from Terra Nova and the black Labrador which undoubtedly a different breed.
